Do not specify cable by habit
The right cabling depends on the service it must carry over its expected lifetime. Consider horizontal run length, switching speeds, Power over Ethernet requirements, electromagnetic interference, containment, fire requirements and the cost of replacing the installation later.
Where Cat6 and Cat6A fit
Cat6 remains suitable for many business access deployments, while Cat6A provides more headroom for 10 Gigabit Ethernet across full channel distances and improved alien crosstalk performance. Installation quality, termination, patching and certification matter just as much as the category printed on the cable.
When fibre becomes the better choice
Fibre is normally preferred for building backbones, longer distances, high bandwidth, electrical isolation and links between communications spaces. Multimode and single-mode options should be selected against distance, transceivers and future capacity rather than simply choosing the cheapest optics today.
Documentation is part of the installation
